'Keeper Of Legends': Highway Plan Changed To Save 400-Year-Old Tree

The 400-yr-aged tree was to be chopped for the Ratnagiri-Solapur highway job.

A 400-year-previous banyan tree that was in the centre of a protest from a freeway task in Maharashtra’s Sangli district will remain unharmed, Maharashtra minister Aaditya Thackeray introduced in a tweet nowadays.

Mr Thackeray mentioned that the Nationwide Freeway Authority of India (NHAI) has shelved designs to cut the tree which was coming in the path of a highway design job. In its place the NHAI will realign the highway close to the tree, he explained.

“The 400 year outdated banyan tree in Sangli district that we saved with a letter to @NHAI_Formal. A single can see the highway shut to the tree. That, now will be realigned to preserve the tree. The tree is a keeper of legends, folklore and reminiscences of several who played there as kids,” he tweeted.

The NHAI experienced planned to chop of the 400-year-aged tree — whose canopy is unfold over 400 sq mt — for the Ratnagiri-Solapur highway project, triggering protests from environmentalists and villagers. The moments also saw activists accumulating close to the tree as a sort of Chipko movement to guard it.

“The NHAI was getting ready to reduce off the tree for the Ratnagiri-Solapur highway undertaking. We started off Chipko movement though maintaining social-distancing in brain to preserve the tree. Getting not of our motion, Atmosphere Minister Aaditya Thackeray wrote to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, who took notice of this and instructed officials to not slice the tree,” claimed Praveen Shinde, an environmental activist.

The motion noticed inhabitants sharing, uploading shots of the tree on social media in an endeavor to display how huge the branches of the tree unfold. Some of these video clips featured monkeys and other species on its branches to emphasize that significant range of animals have made it their household.
