AEG products get the seal of approval for their outstanding performance in the fight against bacteria and viruses

Nuremberg, April 12, 2022

Intelligent Program for Complete Hygiene: Swisstest TestMaterials AG, one of the leading European testing centers in the field of washing, cleaning and sanitation, certifies that AEG is excellent for removing bacteria and viruses from dishwashers, washing machines and tumble dryers have an impact on. AEG receives the renowned SwissTest certification for its washing machines with its anti-allergy program, its tumble dryers with the Hygiene program, and its dishwashers with the Extrahygiene function.

Whether mites, pollen, bacteria or viruses – it is becoming more important to have clean and hygienic laundry in your own home. This is also shown by the 2020 Electrolux study “The Truth About Laundry”1. Here, fighting germs was top of the agenda for more than one in ten adults. Many respondents cited getting rid of germs as the main reason for doing laundry. To further enhance consumer confidence, AEG is going a step further by getting its intelligent programs certified by Swisstest. While all AEG programs aim to eliminate bacteria by default, the high performance of certified devices is even more remarkable, with a 99.999 percent removal rate of some bacteria and viruses. Strict assessments by the External Testing Institute have shown that specific AEG programs are successful against non-enveloped viruses such as the E. coli bacteriophage MS2. This type of virus is difficult to eliminate due to its high tolerance to disinfection and other cleaning measures.

“The collaboration with Swisstest supports our corporate goal of making lives better. By having certified programs that remove up to 99.999 percent of certain bacteria and viruses, we aim to offer our customers even more protection,” Leanne DeVos, Head of Care, explains that worked across the company, including in the areas of research and development. Product marketing, textile and tableware care. We are extremely proud that our products have met Swisstest’s demanding testing requirements and are pleased with the positive results.

Christian Portman, Managing Director of Swisstest.

Certified AEG Programs at a Glance

SwissTest TestMaterials AG confirms the high effectiveness of the anti-allergic washing program for washing machines. This high-performance wash removes more than 99.99 percent of bacteria and viruses from laundry, including Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecium 2. By keeping the washing temperature above 60 °C, the AEG program can also reduce allergens.

Tumble dryers also meet the strict Swisstest testing criteria with a special AEG cleanliness program. By drying the fabric for at least ten minutes at a temperature not exceeding 60 degrees, the hygiene program effectively removes more than 99.9% of bacteria and viruses, including Candida albicans, MS2 bacteriophage and Escherichia coli, from blankets, pillows and clothing.

Swisstest testers were partially impressed with the integrated and freestanding dishwasher’s AEG Extrahygiene function. During the final rinsing phase, the temperature is kept at 69 degrees for ten minutes. It cleans utensils cleanly and removes more than 99.99 percent of bacteria and viruses, including Micrococcus luteus and MS2 bacteriophage 4.

About Swisstest

Swisstest TestMaterials AG is a competent center for testing materials and testing in the areas of washing, cleaning and sanitation. Testing for hygiene labels takes place in-house in the “Hygiene and Microbiology” department, which includes various processes in the areas of laundry hygiene, textile hygiene, antifouling and fungal testing, disinfectant testing and quality assurance. In addition, the department is involved in several R&D projects. The knowledge gained there flows into new testing methods, products and services.

Additional Information

How do consumers know if their device has certified programs?

  • All washing machines with universal dosing drawers have certified programs for dosing detergent.
  • The following models of tumble dryers are certified: T9DE98685, T9DS88689, T8DBC40689, T8DBC40688, T8DBA6680, T8DB68689
  • In terms of dishwashers, all freestanding and semi-integrated models are equipped with certified programs.
  • The “Approved by Swisstest” logo on the AEG website marks the respective model as certified.

Have the programs for SARS-CoV-2 also been investigated?

  • No testing was done for SARS-CoV-2 because SARS-CoV-2 is classified in risk group 3. This limits the number of laboratories where testing can be done. (Biosafety Level 3 or 4).
  • Since household appliances are open systems, it is difficult to protect laboratory personnel from infection.
  • SARS-CoV-2 is an enveloped virus and is therefore more vulnerable to disinfection and cleaning measures than non-enveloped viruses.
  • Non-enveloped viruses are generally more difficult to inactivate and require higher disinfectant concentrations and temperatures, whereas enveloped SARS-CoV-2 is easier to inactivate in the washing process (Sidwell & Dixon, 1969; Gerba, 2001; Gerba & Kennedy, 2007); Gerharts et al., 2009; Henzel et al., 2010).
  • Testing at Swisstest was performed using a known E. coli non-enveloped model virus MS2 bacteriophage, which has a high tolerance for disinfection and cleaning measures.
