Canadian airline Air Transat is currently halting all flight operations due to new travel rules by the Canadian government.
Canada is shutting itself down to protect populations from virus mutations. From 3 February, international air travel will only be possible through airports in Calgary, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. In addition, the government is encouraging airlines to stop flying for the popular holiday destination. Air Transat is responding to this request by suspending flight operations altogether.
End of flight operations by end of April
The Canadian government is urging Canadian airlines to postpone flights to popular holiday destinations. This measure is to protect the Canadian population from virus mutation. During these regulations, Air Transat is forced to produce immediate results – with immediate effect, the airline will completely stop regular flight operations by 30 April. Accordingly, the airline will operate return flights only till 13 February. Meanwhile passengers who have been booked on flights between 14 February and 30 April will be rebooked by the airline by alternative airlines. This should ensure safe return to Canada.
We are incorporating measures requested by the Government of Canada, including not traveling south. This forces us to temporarily suspend all our flights including Europe.
Jean-Marc Eustach, the airline’s president and chief executive officer, announced the end of flight operations. Last Friday, the airlines agreed to postpone all flights to Mexico and the Caribbean until the end of April.
Overall, the termination of flight operations will affect Europe and several destinations in the Caribbean and Latin America. For example, in the Caribbean, flights to Cuba, Jamaica or the Dominican Republic are affected. In Mexico, the airline is flying to Acapulco, Cancun and Cozumel, for example. In addition to major European cities such as Amsterdam, London and Paris, Spain and Italy holiday in Barcelona, Madrid and Malaga as well as Rome and Venice.
Conclusion on complete termination of flight operations by Air Transat
It was not previously understood that the Air Transat would cease all flight operations. Although popular holiday destinations make up a large part of the route network, Air Transat could have operated flights within Canada at least. Personally, I did not expect that flight operations would stop completely. Can you understand the airline’s decision in this harsh way?
