Grunheide A screeching noise regularly follows through the factory buildings in Grünheide. It is the whistle of the press shop, a giant machine as tall as a three-story house, with white paneling and a red frame.
Even the press is in corporate color Tesla Held. And it’s made with German expertise from suppliers like Wefa, Schuler or Hirschvogel. 50-ton press equipment produces body parts with a pressure of 2,500 tons in twenty-second cycles.
Similar presses are also in other car factories. But Tesla wants to use them to manufacture a component that other manufacturers don’t. In addition to parts like doors or tailgates, the press shop will soon be making battery boxes as well. These are the containers for the new, so-called 4680 lithium battery cells.
