The International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) has now announced the allocation of the remaining two quota places to be awarded at last year’s IFSC Asian Championships. South Koreans Jongwon Chon and Chehyun CO complete a group of 40 athletes who will compete in sports climbing at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021.
According to the prescribed qualification system, the two South Koreans qualified through their respective places in the IFSC Climbing World Championship Hachioji 2019 joint event where Seo finished 13th in the women and Chon finished 20th in the men.
Today we completed our qualification process: we know the names of our first Olympians and this is a big moment in our history. The 20 men and 20 women can now focus on Tokyo 2020 and inspire everyone involved in preparing for the Olympic Games, despite the epidemic it has brought with it.

It is a great honor for me to have such big news just a week after I officially took over as President of the Korean Alpine Federation. I would like to thank IFSC and IFSC Asian Council for their excellent support over the last few months. My best wishes to Jongwon Chon and Chehyun Seo for a successful preparation in the coming months. We are excited for our two climbers at the Olympics, where sports climbing will make its historic debut.

When she was only 15, she made her World Cup debut in Villain (SUI) and won silver in the main event. He then went on to win four consecutive season World Cup victories in Chamonix, Bryancon, Xiaomi (CHN) and Enzai (JPN) and the 2019 Lead World Cup trophy.
Olympic qualification for Tokyo 2020 is completed, with the allocation of two quota places. It debuted at Hachioji (JPN) and then included the IFSC Combined Qualifiers in Toulouse and the 2020 IFSC Continental Championships in LA, Moscow, Cape Town and Sydney.
