Bayern star and dream of the World Cup
Davis’ high-speed gate drives Canada crazy
Alfonso Davis is fast, very fast. This can be admired as a regular at FC Bayern. And also in the Canadian national team, where the 20-year-old was convinced with a super sprint and a perfect finish against Panama. Even more so, the nation is upside down — including rapper Drake.
Alfonso Davies suddenly went into turbo mode. The Canadian star player sprinted irresistibly down the middle of his own half, artfully stealing the ball from his utterly shocked opponent Harold Cummings, letting another Panamanian run into the void and completing the right on the left.
It was a goal like a rock song that FC Bayern’s shooting star scored in a 4-1 victory in World Cup qualifying – and the whole nation roared with it. “Aaaalfonso Daavis, are you kidding me?”, the commentator from Broadcasting Station One called into his microphone. Newspapers turned.
The Toronto Star wrote, “Alphonso Davies made it clear to everyone in the audience why, at age 20, he is one of the best players in the world and the best who has ever played for the men’s national team.” As the Globe and Mail reports, “Davis’ performance is turning Canada from a team that no one cares about.”
Davis’ goal was not just a piece of art – it was also a crucial goal in the game’s 66th minute to level it 2-1. The match against Panama was changed, with the Canadian, Olympic champion since 1904, overtaking Mexico and the USA in the table and dreaming of his first participation in the World Cup since 1986.
“Everybody was really into it, everybody wanted to be on the pitch,” Davis said: “The mindset was really strong.” Soon after the final whistle, he received a message from rap star and sports fan Drake, who also posted his jersey on Instagram. Davies is a huge fan of the musician, after winning the Champions League in 2020, he realized that Drake is following him on Instagram. At the time, Davis said, “Oh my god, I can’t believe it. My life is complete. I’m going crazy!”
Well, that is not him, the 20-year-old continues to play football, and Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann is up to him as well. Canada coach John Harderman emphasized the immense willpower of his star player. “He really wants it,” said Harderman: “he dreams of participating in the world championships with this team.” Maybe already in Qatar.
