- In the decisive duel with Canada, Belinda Bencic and Viktorija Golubic make everything clear in person. Because Canada wins the doubles final, it ends 2–1.
- Heinz Gunthard’s team will take on Czech Republic in the semi-finals on Saturday.
Switzerland is still running like clockwork in the final tournament of the Billie Jean King Cup. After a 3–0 win over Italy, when Belinda Bencic and Jill Teichmann scored points, Viktorija Golubic and Bencic again brought the deciding factor to the duel with Canada.
Golubic (WTA 77) defeated Bianca Andreescu (WTA 45) 2: 6, 6: 3, 6: 4. Then Bencic (WTA 12) replaced Leyla Fernandez (WTA 40) in 6:0, 7:5.
This meant that Switzerland was already the group winner and semifinalist before the final doubles. Thanks to a 6:2, 6:1 doubles win by Gabriela Dabrowski/Fernandez against Jill Teichmann/Simona Waltert, Canada still got the honor point.
In the round of the last four, Switzerland meets the Czech Republic somewhat surprisingly. Eastern Europeans won against the favorite USA. Marketa Vondrosova (WTA 99) and Karolina Siniakova (WTA 47) made it all clear in two singles against Danielle Collins (WTA 14) and Coco Gauff (WTA 7), respectively.
Bencic keeps up-coming Fernandez at bay
With a 1-0 lead thanks to Golubic in the back, Bencic played big in second man. In the first set, she performed almost flawlessly. The East Swiss did not give a game to the 2021 US Open finalists and won the match for zero in just 25 minutes.
But it didn’t play out in the same style. The Canadian left-hander went ahead in the second set and is now completely level. Several worth watching rallies developed. When the score was 4:4, Bencic managed a break, which she could not confirm. But with another breakthrough in the serve, the individual Olympic champion made it 6:5 minutes later. And this time he put his nerves on his service and served the match at home.
fighter golubik
In his first appearance at this year’s Billie Jean King Cup, Golubic lost the opening set 6-2 against 2019 US Open winner Andreescu. But once again the woman from Zurich showed her fighting skills. She won the second set 6:3 and went 5:1 in the deciding round thanks to a strong game.
But then it got tired. At a score of 4:5, 30:30 from Andreescu’s point of view, the Canadian made two simple mistakes, allowing Golubic to stretch his arms in the air and celebrate.
