The Canadian national team will not play against Iran in preparation for the World Cup to be held in Qatar. It was officially announced on Thursday. The previously planned Test match was criticized.
In 2020, a plane crash involving two Iranian anti-aircraft missiles killed 176 people. Many Canadian citizens are also involved in the deaths of those on board the crashed plane.
The invitation to the Iranian national team by the Canadian Football Association was strongly criticized by the aggrieved representatives due to the incident. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was also critical: “I have said that I think the sport is a bad idea. I can assure you that Sport Canada has not provided any funding for the sport.”
The friendly was to be played in Vancouver on 5 June.
