Canada lost their final preliminary round match against Finland at the Ice Hockey World Championship in Latvia 2:3 in a penalty shootout and must continue to fear for quarter-final qualification.
Canada will advance only if the winner is after 60 minutes in the evening games Latvia – Germany. Kazakhstan is eliminated. The Kazakhs, who received a sensational ten points as promoters, can no longer proceed.
With a win over Finland, Team Canada could have made it to the quarter-finals. The Canadians took the lead twice (and by about 48 minutes), but received the equalizer four minutes before the end and lost the penalty shootout in the end. Artu Rütslainen scored both Finnish goals in regular time and also scored in the penalty shootout.

Spectators have been admitted to Riga since Tuesday. However, the Switzerland-Great Britain (6:3) and Canada-Finland games had hardly any fans. This was due to the official app of the Latvian Ministry of Health, without which it is not possible to buy tickets (only for vaccinated or healthy people). The app didn’t work on Tuesday morning. Accordingly, the organizers were only able to sell four tickets for the Canada–Finland match before the start of the games.
There should be more during the day; Games Latvia – Germany should be able to see 3000 spectators on Tuesday evening.
