Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has made an unannounced visit to Ukraine. Ukraine’s news agency Ukraineform reported yesterday, citing the mayor of Irpin, that Trudeau visited the city of Irpin in the Greater Kyiv region. It also published a photograph showing the head of government of the NATO country in front of the destroyed houses. A little later, the Canadian government and a spokesman confirmed the visit, during which a meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky was also on the agenda.
After meeting with Zelensky, Trudeau announced that his country would suspend all trade tariffs on Ukrainian products for a year. In addition, arms and military equipment will continue to be supplied to Ukraine, and Trudeau also announced further sanctions against Russia.
Canada belongs to a group of seven major industrialized nations that agreed on further sanctions against aggressive Russia in a video conference in the afternoon. Among other things, the G-7 also agreed to withdraw from Russian oil. Canada has already taken this step, while EU states are still struggling over the exact modalities of a sanctions.
