Taipei – September 21, 2021. Warships from the US and Canadian navies sailed through the Strait of Taiwan yesterday. The US 7th Fleet said Tuesday’s visit demonstrates the commitment of the United States and its allies to a free and open Indo-Pacific.
This is the second time in a year that a Canadian Navy ship has crossed the Taiwan Strait. Taiwan’s defense ministry said it was aware of the route and did not encounter any unforeseen problems.
The US Navy has crossed the Taiwan Strait almost every month for the past two years. By doing so, she wants to show that she has freedom of navigation in the Taiwan Straits under international law.
China opposes US Navy visit in Taiwan Strait. It claims that these visits challenge its sovereign rights. In return, the government of Taiwan welcomes these transits. She says the transit will contribute to peace and security in the region.
