Canadian Bishops: "Great Work Ahead"

The Pope’s visit to Canada is the starting point for the further process of sanctification and reconciliation with the country’s indigenous peoples. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Canada emphasized this in a statement at the end of the Pope’s visit on Friday.

During various meetings, the Pope expressed his admiration for indigenous culture and spirituality, but also expressed deep sorrow over the serious injuries suffered by members of the Church. He specifically mentioned the disastrous consequences of the residential school system. The bishops said, “We have heard the call of the Pope.” Further action plan will be prepared in the general meeting in autumn.

“We thank Indigenous partners, state governments and devout Catholics who have helped us achieve this meaningful progress. But we also see the challenges ahead.” On the agenda are setting up a reparations fund and what to do with artworks created by indigenous artists and placed in Vatican museums. Thank you for your courage and openness in meeting the Holy Father.”
