Chinese state shipping company COSCO wants to acquire a stake in the port of Hamburg. The company is in talks with port operator HHLA to take a stake in Tollort Container Terminal.

Tallerort is one of four large container terminals in the Port of Hamburg – and ships from Chinese shipping company COSCO already regularly head to it. If HHLA and the Chinese come to an agreement, COSCO ships will preferably be handled there in the future. And the Chinese company would also benefit from settling through a subsidiary.

It’s about 30 to 40 percent

There is reportedly 30 to 40 per cent participation in the talks. HHLA is hoping that this will ensure planning safety – and that it will be safe to handle volumes and jobs in the port.

no worries from berlin

According to information from NDR 90.3, negotiations are well advanced and coordinated with the federal government. According to the negotiating chambers, there are no concerns so far about the planned deal with COSCO, from the Chancellor, the Ministry of Economics and Transport, as well as the Foreign Office.

Left port politician Norbert Hackbush drew cautious criticism. He suspects that the participation of the Chinese will eventually lead to more cargo to Hamburg.
