John McAfee faces a long prison term

In the 80s and 90s, John McAfee made a fortune with antivirus software, and he later tried his hand at yoga teacher and politician, among other things. He is currently in custody in Spain. Efforts are now being made to bring him to the USA.

Software developer and antivirus pioneer John McAfee is to be brought to court in the USA for conspiring to defraud cryptocurrencies and launder money. The Justice Department published an indictment on Friday that McAfee could face several years in prison and heavy fines if found guilty.

The 75-year-old man was arrested in Spain in October in connivance with US law enforcement officials who had already accused him of tax evasion and improper advertising of cryptocurrencies. A statement from McAfee was not initially available.

According to US officials, he is still in custody in Spain. US investigators accused the entrepreneur and his advisors and bodyguards, who are also accused, of cheating millions of dollars through cryptocurrency frauds. Both have been charged on a total of seven points, each of which, according to the Ministry of Justice, carries a maximum sentence of five to 20 years.

McAfee founded an anti-virus software company called McAfee in the 1980s, from which he retired in the 1990s. He later ran a yoga center and started an antibiotic development company. In 2012, McAfee made headlines for fleeing an adventurous jungle when he was discovered after killing his neighbor in Belize. In 2015 he was aiming for a presidential candidacy in the USA.
