An extensive and long lunch break is part of everyday life for many seniors. However, taking longer naps during the day may not only increase the risk of Alzheimer’s. At the same time, daytime sleepiness or sleeping late during the day can also be an early symptom, which can be a sign of dementia.

At the start of the study, 76 percent of participants had no cognitive impairment, 20 percent had mild, while four percent had Alzheimer’s disease. Twenty-four percent of the participants, who initially had no intellectual disability, developed Alzheimer’s disease after six years. Researchers found differences in sleep patterns compared to participants who did not develop Alzheimer’s disease.
