Dead Space Remake: Sci-fi horror comes back with next-gen graphics

The rumors were true: EA is working on a remake of the horror classic Dead Space. What players can expect, the developers indicate at the latest EA Play event with a short teaser video. A very intimidating environment featured for the next generation of hardware, which was built with the Frostbite engine.

Dead Space came out of nowhere in 2008 and delivered entertaining sci-fi horror. In the game, technician Isaac Clarke is stranded on the drifting mining spacecraft USG Ishimura. The initial rescue mission quickly becomes a struggle for bare survival, as the crew, mutated into necromorphs, fight against newcomers with all possible means.

There is a lot of tension between the struggle for existence, research into causes, and the discovery of Clark’s girlfriend serving on the Ishimura. This is compounded by the fact that Clark is not and will not be a soldier, but as a technician must defend himself in another way.

Since Visceral Games was shut down after an ambitious Star Wars action game, the remake was not produced by its father. EA Motive (Star Wars: Squadron) is responsible for development.

The use of the Frostbite engine promises contemporary graphics, which EA advertises in the feature set. Platforms provide another indication of the level of technical implementation. PC as well as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S | A remake is being made for X as well. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have been abandoned. As a result, the lowest common denominator in hardware is shifted to more powerful regions leading to a more beautiful world.

It is unclear how much the game is based on the original. The story, characters, mechanics “and more” should be “improved”. The “struggle for existence” is explicitly talked about – so the survival orientation is retained. This point is important: EA gradually made horror games more action-heavy with Dead Space 2 and 3, in hopes of higher sales, but with dilution it produced increasingly weak games. There is no release date for the remake yet. Since only a short teaser has been shown so far, the game will probably be released in late 2022.
