For many patients, this is a bad idea: Doctors cut the wrong part of the body. The same thing has happened to an 82-year-old Austrian now.
An 82-year-old patient had his leg amputated at an Austrian clinic. The man’s left leg really should have been removed, the Freestad Clinic announced on Thursday. Shortly before the operation on Tuesday, however, the wrong limb was marked.
This is a “tragic medical malpractice”. The mixture was detected when the dressing was changed. The second leg of the patient should also be removed now. Upper Austrian Health Holding has announced a comprehensive explanation. The Public Prosecutor’s Office is to be commissioned.
According to the health holding company, the patient has a number of illnesses. Both legs were affected, one of them so bad that a thigh amputation was necessary. “Unfortunately, the error occurred through a series of unfortunate circumstances,” a press release said. The patient and his relatives were offered psychological help. “We assure that we will do everything possible to resolve the case, review all internal processes and question them.”
