Sunflower oil is widely used in the kitchen for frying and cooking. “Oeko-Test” has now tested 21 sunflower oils – most with poor results.
Testers’ conclusion: Sunflower oil is mostly contaminated with mineral oil. The commissioned laboratory demonstrated the highest levels of saturated mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOSH) in Nestle’s refined oils “Thomy Pure Sunflower Oil” and “Pure Sunflower Oil” from Peony. Both were rated “poor”.
MOSH can accumulate in organs such as the liver. It is still unclear whether they affect human health.
Two native organic oils were also rated “poor”. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were found in Aldi Sood’s “Gut Organic Sunflower Oil, Native Cold-Pressed” as well as Daenerys’ “Sunflower Oil, Cold-Pressed”. Among other things, the laboratory has detected the carcinogenic substance benzo(a)pyrene.
Mold pizzas were found in another organic oil.
Only one oil got a “Very Good” grade. Nine were “good”.
