Edeka/Reeve Recall: Carcinogenic Substance Found in Many Types of Ice Cream

Not only one, but several types of ice cream from a popular brand, which can be found in Edeka and Reeve freezers, are being recalled by the Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety. Reason: Ethylene oxide was detected in the products – a highly carcinogenic substance. Until recently, ice cream flavors were sold in Edeka and Reeve across the country.

Ethylene oxide is a gas that, according to the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BFR), is carcinogenic and mutagenic. “Ethylene oxide is mutagenic and carcinogenic. Therefore there is no guideline value without health risks and residues of the substance in food are generally undesirable”, according to a report by BFR.

Ethylene oxide is used as a disinfectant for food, biological insulation, textile fibers, and medical devices. In contrast, according to the German Food Association, ethylene oxide is banned in EU food production. The gas irritates the skin and mucous membranes when inhaled, with the main symptoms being headache, dizziness, vomiting, severe agitation and fainting when inhaled.

A variety of ice creams from manufacturer Mars, sold by Reeve and Edeka, are being recalled. According to the company, the consumption of the products is not harmful. However, several batches of a total of twelve types of ice cream are being recalled from Mars. The recall campaign is currently being criticized in the media, especially by Foodwatch. Because: Mars ice cream products were recalled long ago in other EU countries, but in Germany they were initially sold by Edeka and Reeve. In Germany, the official withdrawal took place much later.
