Women’s Breton trio went to Turin with Ahze and electro musician Alvan “Fullen” – an unusual mix of folk and trance – for France at the Eurovision Song Contest 2022. There he landed in 24th place.
The folk-trance song “Fullen”, composed by Alexis Morvan Rosius aka Alvan, is only the second ESC contribution in Breton after 1996. Alvan was already able to make a name for himself in the French DJ scene as a supporting cast for house duo Offenbach. “Fullen” is his first collaborative project with the folk trio Ahez, composed of Stéraine Diridolou, Stéraine Le Guillo and Marin Lavigne, who also wrote the song’s lyrics. It is about a young woman who takes away the right to live as she pleases. “Fullen” in German means “spark” – or pretty girl.
New ESC boom in France
sensational second place At the ESC in Rotterdam, Barbara Pravi rekindled the French’s dormant enthusiasm for the competition and made an impressive demonstration of the effectiveness of the early decision format. The response to the call for entries for the 2022 contest was similarly overwhelming: with 3,000 submissions, more than four times as many applications were received from the previous year. France Television kept a low profile with information about the programme. The 12 finalists were announced only on 15 February, from the audience and 10 expert judges (incl.) Gjon’s Tears) was allowed to choose the act for Turin.

France’s solidarity with Ukraine
Like “Germany 12 Points”, the French preliminary decision also showed solidarity with Ukraine in many ways. 12 candidates marched with the song “Prayer for Ukraine” Zlata Oganevich. In the presidential election year, the musicians were to introduce themselves with a brief campaign speech, which spoke of their sovereignty at a possible press conference before the vote. Alván and Ahez recommend themselves not only musically, but figuratively as the flagship of a modern, multicultural France, which proudly displays its traditions. It worked great in 2021. It was only 24th in 2022.
