First forensic tool breaks into Apple T2 chip security on Mac

Apple’s T2 security chip has so far offered strong encryption, making it even more difficult for officials and hackers to crack the security barrier. But now there is the first forensic tool that can read T2 passwords as well.

The company Passware has announced the first tool that can crack passwords on Macs with Apple’s T2 security chip. He now reports that Online Magazine 9to5Mac, Investigating officers around the world can order devices with Passware for just under $2,000. For this amount, the buyer then gets an update for one year. According to the software developer, this tool is used to recover passwords and is available for both Windows and macOS. However, to be able to use it, you need direct access to the “target system”. Mac must be connected via USB-C to crack or thunderbolt cable Must be connected to the computer on which the forensic equipment is running.

The Passware Kit “Forensics T2 Add-on” is available for law enforcement agencies and other types of government organizations. As Passware writes, even private companies with “legitimate business needs” can apply for the equipment. All orders are subject to verification by passware. The company wants to protect its software from falling into the wrong hands.

dictionary attack

The fact that forensic tools can be implemented is due to a T2 vulnerability that makes it possible to bypass lock analysis. This allows the tool to perform so called dictionary attacks with known passwords. However, it takes time. According to the developers, 15 passwords are checked per minute until hit. The chip circumvents the method typically used by forensic tools — but the security hole allows you to lock a Mac while you enter passwords in bulk.
