Gas pipeline explosion near St. Petersburg

A gas pipeline exploded near the Russian metropolis of St. Petersburg, according to reports from the region’s governor. Such pictures are appearing on social networks in which fierce fire is visible. Nothing is known about the cause of the explosion.

In the north of St. Petersburg, a massive fire broke out due to the explosion of a gas pipeline. “Firefighters and rescuers are extinguishing the fire caused by the explosion of the gas pipeline between Berngardovka and Kovalyavo,” Alexander Drozdenko, the governor of the Leningrad region, wrote on his Telegram channel. There is no information about possible victims or the cause of the explosion.

At first it was said that there was a blast in an LPG filling station. An exploding gas line was later cited as the cause of the major fire. According to Drozdenko, there is no danger of the flames spreading to residential areas. However, the pillar of fire is visible from kilometers away, as videos on social networks show.

In late September, several cables of the Nord Stream pipeline ruptured in the Baltic Sea after explosions. Investigators have found explosives at the crash site. The Russian leadership, which spoke of an attack, blamed the United States or Great Britain for it.
