Norwich (DPA) – German football players lost to Canada in the European Championship test tournament in England. National coach Martina Vos-Tecklenburg’s team lost 0:1 (0:1) in Norwich on Sunday evening in a duel between the 2016 and 2021 Olympic champions.
In front of just 200 spectators at Cairo Road Stadium, Vanessa Giles (7th minute) scored for Tokyo gold medalists against a passionate but vulnerable German national team.
It was the German team’s first defeat since a 1-0 loss to France last April. “It’s a shame because we put a lot of heart, passion and work into this sport,” said the national coach – but she was not dissatisfied: “I saw a lot of positive things.”
chills
The revived DFB selection, which had already been to do without 14 European Championship candidates in the Arnold Clark Cup due to coronavirus or injury, began with a vastly different starting eleven compared to a 1–1 victory against Spain. So Ann-Katrin Berger was in goal instead of regular keeper Merle Froomes (Eintracht Frankfurt). Chelsea’s 31-year-old and men in front got chills after minutes in the wind and rain, when Giles went from a corner to a 1-0 lead.
VfL Wolfsburg’s chief of defense Lena Oberdorff had to watch from the stands with a mild knee problem. Voss-Tecklenburg was changed to seven positions. Therefore his players initially exhibited major coordination problems and multiple ball defeats. They were unlucky when a shot from FC Bayern captain Lena Magal was intercepted by goalie Giles, but there was no penalty (20′).
Half an hour later, Hoffenheim’s Joule Brand and Munich’s Clara Buhl’s attacks came into play. Canada keeper Callen Sheridan was wary of a dangerous flick from Buhl (41′).
After the break, FC Bayern goalkeeper Lee Schuler, who scored his 24th goal in 35 internationals against Spain, came. Goalkeeper Berger was lucky when he pushed attacker Nickel Prince to the ground, but it was of no consequence (52′). Otherwise, the German team recorded much higher game shares than in the first round, but was without luck in the end.
In the third and final game, the DFB Women meet hosts England in Wolverhampton on Wednesday (8.30pm / ZDF live stream). The Test tournament is also considered an important venue in England for the European Championships in July.
