On the night of Wednesday, 29 December, on Thursday, 30 December, the German U20 national team will be in action for the third time at the World Cup. In Preliminary Group A, national coach Tobias Absterter’s team will meet hosts Canada in Edmonton at 1 p.m. German time.
After the first two group games, young German ice hockey players prepare for the quarter-finals. A narrow 1:3 opening loss against Finland was followed by a 2–1 victory after extra time against the Czech Republic. In order to enter the knockout rounds starting on 2 January, Germany must occupy one of the first four places in a group of five after the preliminary round. Austria still awaits the last group game on Friday, 31 December.
Today’s rivals Canada started their home World Cup with a clear winner. The Motherland of ice hockey won 7–1 against Austria and made the first move to reach the final on 5 January the following year. Anything else would be disappointing for the host’s U20s.
