Invitation for press event
The Con.Screen: Science in the Pentagon
Invitation to the press conference: the inauguration of a traveling media installation by the University of Konstanz and the City of Konstanz on June 21, 2021
In the future, three black pentagons will appear in Konstanz, like small houses in public squares. Anyone who sits down can experience applied science on a large-format screen, learn about the University of Konstanz’s latest research projects – or simply find a comfortable place to sit. Three Pentagons is a public media installation called Kon.Screen, a joint project by the University of Konstanz and the City of Konstanz, and with the support of Konstanz municipal utilities. Kon.Screen brings science and research to the public squares of the city as well as to the island of Mainau. On Monday, June 21, 2021, con.screen at 5.30 pm in the Stadtgarten in Konstanz, near the council building, Rector Prof. Dr. Katharina Holzinger and Lord Mayor Uli Burchard will be officially opened.
The interactive Kon.Screen presents current research from the University of Konstanz on its screen walls. The visitor’s cell phone turns into a remote control: Using the free Kon.Screen app, visitors can click through the program and select topics that are of particular interest to them. Of course, Kon.Screen works even without a mobile phone.
The first topic of Kon.Screens will be research on the collective behavior of animals in Konstanz: How do flocks of birds and fish manage to move in perfect synchronization and coordinate within the flock? How do migratory birds like storks find their global flight routes? How can we succeed in discovering the collective meaning of animals, and what technologies play a role in this? The Kon.Screen Cluster of Excellence presents the scientific work and research infrastructure of the “Center for the Advanced Study of Collective Behavior”. Among other things, the ICARUS project will be presented in this context, an antenna system on the International Space Station ISS for global observation of animal migration.
Kon.Screen is a travel media installation. He runs quarterly within Konstanz: other possible locations are Bodenseeforum/Serhain, Augustinerplatz and Mainau Island.
The development of Kon.Screen was made possible in collaboration with the Konstanz University of Applied Sciences for Technology, Business and Design (HTWG). The design and interaction concept of Kon.Screen was presented at HTWG by Prof. Eberhard Schlag as part of a project. Computer scientist at Konstanz University Prof. Dr. Dr. Harald Reiter and Prof. Dr. Falk Schreiber, in collaboration with the agencies Contexagon and Insynergy, contributed the multimedia installation and technical know-how to bring the app to life. Kon.Screen is funded by Konstanz municipal utilities.
