– Expectations were high for the first German World Cup medal – but the discus trio could not fulfill them. Also there was no incentive for German fans still on the track.
Fifth place for Claudine Vita in discus is the best German result to date at this World Championships in Athletics in the United States – but earlier medal hopes were out of reach in the final and disappointment, especially for Olympic silver medalist Kristin. For Pudenz, the latter was huge.
Konstanz Klosterhalfen and Gesa Krauss were unable to brighten the mood on the tartan track in Eugene.
cycle
The German women’s trio clearly missed out on the expected medals. Claudine Vita took fifth place as the best. The 25-year-old threw 64.24m in an utterly astonishing victory for Chinese Bin Feng. Shenis Kraft and Olympic silver medalist Kristin Pudenz were no longer in the top eight after three throws and were no longer allowed to engage in a medal fight. Pudenz managed 59.97m in just one throw and finished eleventh, with the other two attempts ending in a safety net. Kraft threw 62.35m and missed three more attempts in ninth place. Fang unexpectedly won by 69.12m ahead of Croatia’s Sandra Perkovic (68.45) and United States’ Valery Allman (68.30).
javelin throwing
SC Potsdam’s Annika Marie Fuchs has reached the final. In qualification, the 25-year-old former U23 European champion threw 59.36m in the second attempt, setting a ninth-best distance. At the World Cup in Doha three years ago, she did not survive elimination. Japanese Haruka Kitaguchi made the farthest throw with 64.32m. The medal fight will take place on Saturday (3.35 a.m. CEST/ARD). European champion Kristin Hussong has canceled participation in the World Cup due to illness.
5000 meters
Germany’s world-class runner Konstanz Klosterhalfen missed the final. In the lead-up, a time of 15:17.78 minutes was not enough for the 25-year-old from Leverkusen to break into the top twelve runners-up race. The 2019 World Cup 3rd only reached 19th place. The other two German starters were also eliminated: Elina Rey, fourth at the European Championships, finished 17th in 15:13.92 minutes, while LC Rehlingen’s Sarah Benfares finished 33rd in 16:34.23. She had health problems due to the high temperature and needed medical attention.
800 meters
Mark Reuther clearly missed out on a place in the semi-finals and finished 40th out of 42 runners with a time of 1:50.75 minutes. Canada’s Marco Erop clocked 1:44.56.
3000m hurdle
Two-time European champion Gesa Krauss was completely left behind in the final. In 9:52.66 minutes, the 29-year-old came third in the 2019 World Cup to finish 15th and last. Kroos was about a minute slower than Kazakhstan’s winner Nora Jaruto, who took the win in 8:53.02. Silver and bronze went to two Ethiopians Verkuha Getachev (8:54.61) and Mekides Abebe (8:56.08).
