Mississippi pols vote to remove Confederate symbol from state flag

Mississippi lawmakers on Sunday voted to eliminate the Accomplice symbol from their condition flag.

Users of the point out Home and Senate broke into loud applause after both chambers handed the monthly bill to retire the flag with wide bipartisan support.

“How sweet it is to rejoice this on the Lord’s working day,” Republican House Speaker Philip Gunn, who is white, reported soon after the measure was passed.

Mississippi legislators put the Accomplice emblem on the flag in 1894. The state was the past in the nation to use the symbol  — a pink field crossed with a blue X dotted with 13 white stars — in its flag.

The flag has been controversial between citizens for decades, with the state facing enhanced force over the previous month to eliminate it amid world-wide racial injustice demonstrations brought on by the law enforcement killing of George Floyd.
