Moroccan high-flyers - now the World Cup in their own country?

Azzouzi advocates a joint African bid for the World Cup

No wonder Moroccans want to experience this atmosphere in their own country. Morocco has already applied for the World Cup five times. However, so far the delivery has never worked. The next attempt is now pending: “On the instructions of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, we will apply to host the 2030 World Cup,” Moroccan sports minister Rashid Talbi Alami told the AFP news agency.

“You can see the enthusiasm for football”

Former Moroccan national player and current managing director of SpVgg Greuther Fürth, Rachid Azzouzi, welcomes the move. “I would like the region to have a World Cup at some point,” he said in a BR24 Sport interview, adding: “You can see how enthusiastic this country is about football, how enthusiastic Africa is about football.” Azouzi had traveled to Qatar and was himself saw Morocco lose 2–0 to France in the semi-finals of the World Cup,

However, Azzouzi raises an important point. It may not be so easy for Morocco to lift the World Cup on its own, as all 48 teams will participate in the future – for this it needs some places. For 2026 the USA, Canada and Mexico have joined forces.
