The Canadian women’s football team won the gold medal at the Japan Olympics.
Maple Leaves defeated Sweden 3–2 on penalties in the final, which was moved from Tokyo to Yokohama. After 120 minutes it is 1-1. The American team got the bronze medal after defeating Australia 4-3 on Thursday.
Stina Blackstenius gave Sweden a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute. The Canadians beat USA in the semi-finals to equalize with a penalty kick from Jesse Fleming in the 67th minute.
After that no team can decide, not even in extra time.
Caesar waives the decision, Sweden loses
In a penalty shootout, the nerves on both sides fail to line up. Seven of the 12 penalties – four by the Swede, three by the Canadian – were either fallen by the goalkeepers, hit the post or went wide.
Sweden’s team captain Caroline Seeger becomes a tragic player. As the fifth Scandinavian shooter, she could have taken her team to an Olympic victory, but shot on target.
Ultimately, Julia Grosso converted the decisive penalty for the North Americans. Canada has now won the gold medal, after bronze in 2012 and 2016.
Meanwhile, Mexico’s men won the bronze medal. In the shorter final, they defeated Olympic hosts Japan 3–1 (2–0). Sebastian Cordova scored from a penalty kick in the 17th minute, with Johann Vasquez (22nd) and Alexis Vega (58th) scoring the victory. Kaoru Mitoma (78th) scores for Japan.
