Dune fire off Dutch coast – holiday park evacuated
Hega The Netherlands is also affected by drought. The mound caught fire on Tuesday along the border with the coastal province of Zeeland. According to emergency services, a holiday park has been evacuated.
A holiday park was evacuated on Tuesday due to forest fires along the dunes on the island of Goeri-Overflecki in South Holland, according to rescue services. According to public broadcaster Omroep Zeeland, the island borders the coastal province of Zeeland, where the fire was also clearly visible. The fire started in Brauversdam at around 3:45 pm. At first it was said that the mound fire is raging on Zeeland.
The Air Force sent a helicopter to help firefighters douse the fire. Like other parts of Europe, the Netherlands suffers from drought during a long, dry and hot summer. These conditions have encouraged fires to flare up in many parts of Europe.
Initially no one was reported to be injured. However, officials said the main coastal road in the province, which attracts many tourists in summer, has been closed. About 300 holiday makers who had to leave the holiday park were instructed to move to the nearby sports hall.
