Canadian GP 2022
Red Bull also wins on tracks where Ferrari is faster. As always, Mercedes got the most out of its package. The World Constructors’ Champion shines with two trump cards: its drivers and reliability. We analyzed Montreal’s performance of all ten teams in form checks.
Ferrari will cry for missed opportunities at the end of the season. Again the F1-75 was the fastest car. And Red Bull won again. For the sixth time in a row. There is always something coming for Ferrari. This time the starting place penalty for Charles Leclerc. And a lack of courage to give Carlos Sainz a set of softs for the last 15 laps during the safety car phase.
Sainz was on average about three tenths faster than Max Verstappen. But to overtake he would have needed a delta of 0.6 seconds. This would have only been possible with more new and softer tyres. Charles Leclerc was doing damage control. Traction problems slowed him on the move. There too, there was more than 5th place.
Alfa Romeo is making ground again
Mercedes returned home for the fourth time this season with 27 points. This is the maximum at the moment. For that, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell need to finish third and fourth and they need outside help. This time Red Bull distributed gifts. Sergio Perez retired with a damaged gearbox. Mercedes drivers regularly make the most of their package. He speaks for her. And Mercedes are bulletproof. He speaks for the package. Unfortunately it’s not fast enough. Again seven tenths were missing.
Behind the Mercedes come the elevator crew. Alpine and Alfa Romeo went up, McLaren and Alfa Tauri down. Like Ferrari, Alpine says: there could have been more. Alfa-Sauber got what was possible. Aston Martin missed his chances on Saturday. Don’t expect miracles on the grid from 16th and 17th, although the car showed renewed potential.
