Saarland’s Beer Is One of the World’s Nine Best
Beer is one of the most popular alcoholic drinks among Germans. But which is the best? The international jury of the “World Beer Awards” again this year tasted thousands of barley juices. The only German front runner comes from the Saarland.
In 2020, Germans drank about 95 liters of beer per capita. In a European comparison, only two neighboring countries, the Czech Republic and Austria, have higher beer consumption. Pils and wheat beers are among the most popular types in Germany. But what types of beer and brands perform best internationally?
To find out, the international jury of the “World Beer Awards” blindly tasted thousands of beers from around the world and evaluated them according to their taste. The title of “best beer” was contested in nine categories.
Only one German beer made it in the first place. Cellar Beer from Carlsberg Brewery Recognized as the best lager beer from Homburg, Saarland.
Last year, two German beers were able to prevail: “Kloster Starkbier” from Baden-Württemberg’s Alpirsbacher Klosterbru brewery was chosen as the world’s best lager, aAs the world’s best IPA (Indian Pale Ale), Munich Brewery Crew Republic’s “Drunken Cellar” was able to convince the jury.
With two beers, the United States and Belgium make up the race as overall winners this time around.

- Best Light Beer: Blonde, Enosteke, France
- Best Weisenbier: Bruges Wheat Beer, De Halve Mann Brewery, Belgium
- Best Dark Beer: Qualified, Tackman Brewing Company, USA
- Best’s Sour & Wild-Beer 10-4-20, Indie Alehouse, Canada
