The new chip has several upgrades over its direct predecessor, the Snapdragon 695, due to the fact that it’s basically the snapped Snapdragon 780G. Among other things, the new chip also supports LPDDR5X RAM in addition to LPDDR4 RAM, which can accommodate up to 12 gigabytes.

Also new is that the chip is now being manufactured on a 4-nanometer scale, so it should work a bit more efficiently. In addition, 4K recording with HDR support is now offered, as previously maximum 1080p recording was possible. Other features include a Snapdragon X62 modem, which of course comes with 5G support. In addition, the modem supports both sub-5 GHz and mmWave networks, so it can be used worldwide for 5G access. There is also Bluetooth 5.2, Wi-Fi 6E, support for QuickCharge 4.0 Plus, and the option to use a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz on displays with FHD+ resolution. For a new mid-range smartphone, the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 should bring a welcome improvement in terms of performance and features.
It remains to be seen when the new Qualcomm SoC will be available in the finished smartphone. The introduction will probably happen in the next few weeks, so that devices equipped with Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 may appear this year.
