In the year of their 100th anniversary, Slovaks jumped into the Spengler Cup. Can you repeat the victories of the 1970s?
Suddenly, Mark Gianola had to move quickly when it became clear last Sunday that both Ambari-Piotta and Team Canada might not be able to compete in the Spengler Cup due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, the OC president found a solution, or two of them: on the one hand, the Bern club agreed to make the selection, on the other hand, Slovan Bratislava accepted the invitation.
The Great History of the Spengler Cup
The Slovakian team wants to celebrate the anniversary of their club in the Landwassertal. Like HC Davos, Slovene is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. And the team from the capital city is in lively form: the Slovenes lead the domestic league by 10 points. Two North American imports set the pace, with William Charles Rapuzzi from the United States and Brent Harris from Canada. Both of them have already amassed 35 scorer points after 27 rounds.
And the team that left the KHL in 2019 for financial reasons has also made its mark in Davos. In the 1970s, 4 competitions resulted in 3 tournament wins – still in the open air at that time. If HCD still needed some information, they could knock on Friborg-Gottoron: it defeated an opponent of Bratislava as part of the Champions Hockey League.
