In the round of 16, the Swiss were surprisingly able to defeat the Czech Republic, while Canada defeated the Chinese team 7:2. The quarterfinals will be held on Wednesday.

The Swiss ice hockey team surprisingly reached the quarter-finals at the Winter Olympic Games in Beijing. After three losses in the opening round, Switzerland defeated the Czech Republic 4-2 (2-1, 1-0, 1-1) in the deciding match on Tuesday. Switzerland played their best game of the tournament so far against the 1998 Olympic champions. Swiss national coach Patrick Fischer put himself under extreme pressure before the game against Czech Republic favorites after a disappointing preliminary round. “If we go home with four losses, it will be a scam,” Fischer said.

Canada beat China 7-2 (2-1, 3-1, 2-0) on Tuesday, with Jordan Weil and Adam Tambellini scoring twice each for the North Americans.

Quarterfinals will be on Wednesday

The first quarter-finals meet the USA and Slovakia on Wednesday (05.10 CET), while Denmark takes on Russia at 07.00 CET. The Swiss are allowed to challenge the Finns a little later at 9.40 a.m. (CET), while Canada plays Sweden in the quarter-finals at 2.30 p.m. (CET).
