A severe storm is brewing in Greece
Countless people seek safety on the roofs of their homes Heavy rains in Greece cause chaos on the streets and in many residential areas. There is no change in the weather at the moment.
The storm, accompanied by heavy rains, has caused significant traffic inefficiencies and flooding in Greece. Hundreds of people had to save their lives on roofs to avoid flooding their homes. In Athens alone, fire brigades had to go out more than 1,400 times on the nights of Thursday and Friday to rescue people and pump water from flooded homes, civil defense said. Hundreds of vehicles got stuck in the waterlogged roads.
Officials said there was no victim as of Friday morning. For this reason, the civil defense closed the two main arteries of Athens on the coast and the motorway in the north of Greece until Friday night and 8 a.m. “We have to be careful, the danger is huge,” said the minister responsible for civil defense Christos Stylianides on state television.
Most schools and all government-related emergency services remained closed on Friday. A meteorologist on state television said, “In many places, the water came down as much as it has rained throughout the year.” It rained heavily in the morning in parts of Rhodes, Kos, Santorin, Mykonos and Crete. To the Meteorological Department The weather is not expected to improve till Sunday.
