BERLIN (DPA) – The name of the backing band is a bit misleading: Delta Sugar – which sounds like South America, while front woman Samantha Martin and her colleagues come from Canada. On the other hand: the music with the famous role models of Southern Sol – that’s what this group does.

Samantha Martin and Delta Sugar certainly don’t mind if their new album “The Reckless One” (Gypsy Soul / Bertus) is classified under “Retro”. For those who can refer to legendary musicians such as Mavis Staples, Areta Franklin, Sharon Jones or Tina Turner, such a label is an honor. Also, the 37-year-old woman from Toronto has such a loud voice and such a capable band that she is guaranteed not to finish between the ranks and file of the epigons.
While “Send the Nightingale” (2015), the Samantha Martin-led Delta Sugar debut was still fairly modest, the follow-up “Run to Me” (2018) is already a rhymed gospel soul with fun rhythms and a brass section Was. “The Reckless One” now also renders this fat sound.
In addition to the eleven songs on which Martin helped write the shortest (sample tip: the brilliant “I Got a Feeling” and the girl group track “Sacrifice”), he inspired one of Bob Dillon’s “Meet Me in the Morning” Inspire with the cover. Only that we will not be able to hear the great voice of a big band in a sweaty club (with the largest possible stage) in this powerful voice and visionary future.
