Majority in the Regional Council for the Reinspanj
Rhine-Sieg district The Regional Council, the political body of the Cologne district government, has voted in favor of the construction of the Rheinspange between the A555 on the left bank of the Rhine and the A59 on the right bank of the Rhine.
The outcome of the vote in the regional council was expected. The CDU, SPD, FDP and AFD voted with a total of 29 votes for the resolution to proceed immediately to the construction of a Rhine embrace between Wesseling or one of the Bornheimer Rhine towns on the left bank of the Rhine and Niederkassel on the right bank of the Rhine. . There were twelve votes together against the Greens and the Left/Volt. A protest motion by the Greens and Linke/Volt to immediately halt the construction project was rejected with a vote of opposite proportion.
However, this vote has no direct impact on the implementation of the Rhine crossing. The new central government will decide this. There is no clear position in their alliance agreement on a project to relieve highways and state roads around Bonn and Cologne.
Benefits and costs are checked
Twelve types are currently being investigated for their benefits, their costs, and their environmental and social adaptability. In the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan, the Rhine crossing is currently listed under “urgent need”, i.e. it has a top priority. Ambitious target: to be completed in 2030.
Niederkassel CDU man Markus Kitz spoke candidly at the regional council for the Rhine crossing to reduce traffic jams in the area. However, Kitz, who is faced with several opponents of the project in Niederkassel, favors a tunneling solution. In Bornheim and Niederkassel, all legal options against bridge planning will be exercised.
The Greens argued that building a new bridge would not solve the traffic problems in the area. Quite the contrary: they attract even more traffic.
