Alphonso Davies (22) enters the history books!

The Bayern star scored Canada’s first World Cup goal in a 4–1 defeat against runners-up Croatia.

The left-back needed only 68 seconds for this. A Buchanan cross quickly pointed to Davies for the historic goal (second).

With the Lightning goal, he more than makes up for his penalty buck from the opening game. In a 1–0 draw with Belgium, he narrowly missed a penalty that would have given Canada the lead.

Against Croatia, despite a fast start, it was not enough for Canada’s first points at the World Cup. In addition to this year’s participation, North Americans had already competed in the world’s largest soccer tournament in Mexico in 1986.

At the time, Canada was eliminated without a point or goal, in a group with the Soviet Union, Hungary and France. At the Qatar World Cup, Davis and Co. can celebrate for the first time in at least 36 years.

Croatia turned the game before half-time: first, Hoffenheim striker Andrzej Kramarić (31) equalized with his first shot on goal at the World Cup (36′), then Marko Livaja (29) scored from 20 meters. Scored from 2-1 (44.).

Like Belgium’s bankruptcy, Canadians are surprisingly strong against Croatia. Kramarić’s second goal made it 3–1 and took the decision twenty minutes before the end (70′).

In the straight Bundesliga duel with Davis, the Hoffenheim Clippers finally won. Lovro Major scored the final score in extra time (90′ + 4′).

For Davis and his Canadians, the defeat has already ended the World Cup. With Croatia and Morocco on four points after two games, Canada’s last game against Morocco on Thursday is all about a possible first points at the World Cup.

Croatia can also secure a group win with three points in their last group game against Belgium on Thursday.

The Croatian debut served as a good omen: for the third time in its World Cup history, Croatia is unbeaten after two matches. In the last two cases, you finished third (1998) and second (2018).
