- 1. Switzerland
- 2. Austria
- 3. Germany
A young Swiss team surprisingly kept the competition in their place in Courchevel/Meribel. Delphine Darbelle, Livio Simnet, Andrea Ellenberger and Father Janutin created a minor sensation and crowned themselves in the team event after an impressive performance. Neither Canada in the quarterfinals nor Germany in the semifinals nor Austria in the end had anything to oppose the Swiss team.
In the final, Olympic champion Austria was the dominating country in the team competitions – but the SV team did not know how to stop the wild Swiss. The Swiss won the duel 3:1. In the beginning only Darbelle had to concede defeat to Ricarda Hauser.
In the quarter-finals, the Swiss ski team stoked hopes of a coup with a clear 4–0 victory over the more experienced Canadian team. Germany then had to admit defeat in the semi-finals by 1:3.
Ellenberger leads youth team
Particularly impressive: Simone’s performance. The 23-year-old, who shone in this season’s European Cup, was the only athlete to complete the course in less than 22 seconds. And that twice in the semi-finals and final. Janutin, who came to know about his nomination only in the evening, was also confident across the board.
Simonet, Janutin and Darbelle had five World Cup starts under their belts. It was Darbelle’s first ever World Cup race. She won a bronze medal at the Junior World Championships in the team event in Canada in early March.
Routine not starting
With the exception of Ellenberger, who had already competed in Beijing with Wendy Holdner, Gino Caviezel and Justin Murisier and were eliminated in the quarter-finals, the Swiss team had no experienced riders. For example, Holdner (chopped on the calf) and Camille Rast (knee problem) took it easy for a weekend race.
Courchevel/Méribel . this is how things go on in me
