Russia 6-0 Belarus – Russia clearly lived up to its role as the favorite against Belarus. It was 5-0 only after the first third. Only in the last third did the final goal fall to make it 6–0. Russia will face Canada in the Real Classic in the quarter-finals.
Slovakia 3-7 Czech Republic – Even before the encounter, both the teams were selected for the quarter-finals. It was all about placing in Group A – and of course about prestige in the neighboring duel. The Czech team, which had a poor start in the World Cup, finally celebrated an undisputed 7-3 victory. This pushed them to third place in the group, overtaking the Slovaks.
Group B
Germany 2-1 Latvia – At the end of the group games there was a real crime thriller. Germany and Latvia competed for the quarter finals. Canada also rejoiced, as “Maple Leaves” relied on the win after 60 minutes – and it came. The Germans started off furiously with two goals. However the Latvian again came in the middle third. But now it was not enough to compensate. Germany will now face Switzerland in the quarter-finals, Canada has just reached the eighth round and hosts Latvia have been eliminated.
Canada – Finland 2: 3 NP – The Canadians succumbed to Finland 2:3 after a penalty shoot-out in the afternoon, but they were still able to avoid the preliminaries and World Cup infamy. As Germany defeated Latvia in the evening, Canada still advanced to the quarter-finals. As fourth in the group it is now up against the first in Group A, Russia.
Italy – USA 2: 4 – In the last World Cup match also, Italy’s weak team did not get any chance. Despite a respectable performance, the team lost 4–2 to USA. The Italians are the only team to finish the World Cup without a point. The United States, on the other hand, go to the quarter-finals as group winners and meet Slovakia there.
