(Motorsport-Total.com/Motor1) – A massive increase in sales of electric cars and a ban on petrol and diesel engines from the European Union by 2035 seem to seal the imminent end of the internal combustion engine.

Yamaha Develops Hydrogen V8 for Toyota

However, there is still little hope for those who do not want to do without the sound of pistons, connecting rods, cylinders, crankshafts and the big V8 engine. One reason for hope is this new engine, developed by Yamaha Toyota was introduced and developed. This is a hydrogen-powered internal combustion engine: a 5.0-liter V8 with 450 hp.
Toyota has turned to a longtime partner, Yamaha, to test the potential of these hydrogen-powered engines and the possibility of using a fuel that promises to be “carbon neutral.”
The announcement of the new hydrogen-powered V8 engine reflects the enthusiasm that inspired those responsible for the project, which began five years ago. Starting with Takeshi Yamada, Head of Vehicle Development at Yamaha’s Technical Research Center: “I’m so glad the project came to life. I started to notice that hydrogen-powered engines are a lot of fun.”
“Naturally, the hydrogen-powered engines inspire a certain excitement and are easy to operate without resorting to electronic systems. Everyone who’s tested the prototype was quite surprised at first, but eventually got to their faces. Got out of the car with a big grin.”
“As I watched the reactions, I began to believe that hydrogen engines really had tremendous potential. They weren’t the only replacement for gasoline.”
The hydrogen engine development program has nothing to do with fuel cells. This is part of a broader agreement announced in November 2021 between five companies: Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Subaru CorporationToyota Motor Corporation, Mazda Motor Corp. and Yamaha engines.

Yoshihiro Hidaka, President of Yamaha Motor, says: “Celebrating our passion for the internal combustion engine, hydrogen powertrains have the potential to be carbon neutral. By collaborating with companies from different cultures and with different abilities and increasing the number of our partners By doing so, we want to exist in the world of tomorrow.”
The engine now offered is based on its own 5.0 liter V8 engine Lexus RC F, However, some changes were made – for example the injectors, cylinder head and intake manifold. The block makes 450 horsepower at 6,800 rpm and develops a maximum torque of 540 Nm at 3,600 rpm.
For comparison: The same engine running on premium petrol makes 464 hp at 7,100 rpm and 520 Nm at 4,800 to 5,600 rpm. So power is pretty much the same, while torque is up a bit and coming very soon. Does it give hope? Definitely!
